Relationships, not parts.

Through a systems change and speculative futures lens, we recognize that catalytic, transformative change emerges from the dynamic interplay of relationships, not isolated interventions. Our approach understands that vital systems are inherently synergistic – each element is connected to others in an intricate dance of mutual influence and support. This relational understanding drives our work in historically disinvested communities on Chicago's South and West sides, where we weave together physical infrastructure, social networks, and economic systems to catalyze lasting change.

At the heart of our futures practice is recognizing that community transformation happens through the careful cultivation of connections: part-to-part building systems, each joining others in an evolving choreography of change. Through Open Futures, we facilitate processes that help communities imagine and shape alternative futures while building the networks and capabilities needed to realize them. This work transcends traditional planning by engaging multiple ways of knowing – from local wisdom to technical expertise, cultural memory to emerging trends – to create robust frameworks for community-led transformation.

Our systems change approach recognizes that sustainable transformation requires working at multiple levels simultaneously: strengthening individual organizations, fostering cross-sector collaborations, and reshaping the underlying conditions that have perpetuated disinvestment. Through participatory design processes, strategic foresight, and capacity building, we help communities develop the tools and relationships needed to navigate complexity and drive systemic change. This integrated approach ensures that physical improvements in the built environment are supported by strong social networks, sustainable economic models, and culturally rooted leadership – creating resilient systems that can adapt and thrive in the face of future challenges.
